Thai Drama Recommendations: Fav Thai Dramas 2016

While I admit that it’s a little early to be cranking out the ‘favorite dramas’ list, there have been some lakorns that have captivated me from beginning to end so far this year. I simply couldn’t let a whole year pass without mentioning them. That said, I’ve included my favorite dramas (so far!) of 2016 below. As we still have 5 months left of the year, this list could potentially grow.

Note: I don’t average many lakorns a year. It’s only within the past two months that I’ve started watching more of them, so these lists will be small and average only 2, maybe 3 dramas each.

Fav Thai Dramas 2016

padiwarada

(Beloved Loyal Wife) – James Jirayu has been on my radar for a while. I first saw him in Ruk Sutrit (Love to the Extreme) and while his character was the epitome of a spoiled brat, he really grew on me. Once I saw that he was going to be the lead in Padiwarada, I started to do a little research. I had never watched a period lakorn before, but it was easy to fall in love with this one. It wasn’t insta love; it was an arranged marriage that neither Saran nor Rin wanted. As much as they clashed and bickered, true love eventually blossomed as they got to know one another. There was a really, really irritating side character that tested my resolve until the very end, but James and Bella are so perfect and on point in this series that’s it’s hard to stay aggravated.

mon rak asoon

Mon Rak Asoon – Of my favorite’s list, I consider Mon Rak Asoon to be a sleeper drama. What I mean by that is that I started to watch it to fill the void of another drama, but it only took a few episodes for me to realize what a masterpiece this drama was. For me, Film as Terd stole the show and had me loving and hating and loving him over and over again. Terd is a complicated character who is colder, meaner, and emotionally closed off because of a personal tragedy. Nampeung coming into his life to teach his young, troubled son is just what the two of them need. The question is can either of them open up their heart to Nampeung? The answer to that question is a resounding yes!

It could be a difficult drama to get through as Terd and his son could be pretty wretched to Nampeung, but they eventually warmed up to her. Phew! After all that they put Nampeung through, it was a victorious moment when the finally accepted her.

Piang Chai Kon Nee Mai Chai Poo Wised

(When a Man Loves a Woman) – I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t like bratty, self-absorbed female leads. It took me ages to watch Leh Nangfah for that very reason. Nonetheless, I slowly started to warm up to our female lead in Piang Chai Kon Nee Mai Chai Poo Wised. As opposite as the leads were, they were oddly charming and well-matched.

Anusaniya is brilliant when it comes to business, but when it comes to personal relationships, she doesn’t know to act. Satawat is warm and hard-working and genuinely good. What’s not to love with a humbled doctor? Warning: There are a few elements of this drama that I couldn’t stand, but the relationship between Anusaniya and Satawat caught me – hook, line, and sinker. Be prepared for an arranged marriage that takes some getting used to. Plus, James Ma is really, really, really adorable. (Are you guys catching a trend here with the James’ and arranged marriage themes? I promise it wasn’t intentional!)

Upcoming Drama List

While we’re on the subject of Thai dramas, here are a few more I plan to start watching eventually:

two spirits' love

Song Huajai Nee Puea Tur aka Two Spirits’ Love – Giving this one a chance as I liked Mint when I watched Cubic last year. I’ve only seen Mario in the movie Little Thing Called Love, so I look forward to seeing their work together.

rak fun thalob

Rak Fun Thalob aka Love Chaotically – I know I seem to reference Leh Nangfah a lot, but I really liked Vill’s work there, so much that I’ve been seeking out some of her dramas to see a different side to her acting. Plus, I’m a sucker for a good road trip story. It’s all about the journey, lessons learned, and personal growth that I enjoy the most. I can’t forget to add that I’ve never watched a Thai series with a road trip, so that was a bonus point.

angel destiny

Angel Destiny – I love me some Golf. (And Mike, too.) Anyway, this one caught my eye, but I don’t know much about the project, so this is on the back burner for a while.

u prince series

U Prince Series – This is currently being subbed on GMM’s youtube page. There are 11 parts (meaning 11 different stories), which you can read about here. I’m tempted to start it now, but I will probably won’t start watching until an entire part is finished as I would love to do a brief review of each story.

Are there any new lakorns/Thai dramas you think I should be watching that I’m not? I’m always up for suggestions! This has been a very busy summer for me. I haven’t had many opportunities to blog to a degree that I feel happy about. I also have to factor in the fact that I am watching k-dramas and a Filipino drama right now, which doesn’t give me much wiggle room. Lakorns are second to k-dramas for me, so I could always make a little more wiggle room if I need to.
